Schiehallion A walk - 19 July 2026

Ten walkers (including a new member and 2 non-members trying our walks for the first time) enjoyed a beautiful warm sunny day on Schiehallion. This is an annual summer A walk. Thanks to Fiona for stepping in to take charge of the group when the leader was unwell. She was really gutted to miss this! Threlkeld to Keswick and Friar's Crag - C walk 11 July 2026

We walked out of Threlkeld village towards Keswick, picking up the Threlkeld Railway path for a lovely, picturesque walk which finished at Keswick’s quite spectacular Old Station Building. After walking through the town, we went on towards Friar’s Crag, Keswick’s famous viewpoint, and Strandshag Bay. We then enjoyed a meal in a Wetherspoons pub before the bus home.

Walla Crag from Keswick - B walk 11 July 2026

On a very hot day, 10 of us set out from Keswick to reach the fantastic viewpoint of Walla Crag. We then had a steep descent which was a bit more challenging than planned so well done everyone for safely completing the challenge. It was then back to Keswick for well earned refreshments.

Friars Crag, Lake District - Explorer walk 11 July 2026

Blencathra, Lake District - A walk 11 July 2026

8 of us had a lovely day going the easy way up Blencathra, also know as Saddleback due to its distinctive shape, via Scales Fell, Hallsfell Top and Blease Fell in a circuit from Threlkeld.  It was very hot, especially on the ascent in the sun and out of the wind, but it was cooler the higher we went and it even got quite cloudy with distant views disappointingly hazy. We could hear the odd rumble of thunder way in the distance and we could see the rain clouds to the west, but we got literally a few drops of rain on the descent.  Although we did not reach the coffee shop in Threlkeld before closing time, we had plenty of time to enjoy the preferred well-deserved cold drinks in the Horse and Farrier before the coach picked us up an hour later.  A grand day out.   Photos by Fiona Taylor, Laura Muir and Phil McElroy.

Rigging Hill, Largs - B walk 28 June 2026

A lovely circular walk up the empty rolling hills behind Largs on the Ayrshire coast, in glorious weather despite forecast thunderstorms and showers.  We had clear views of Cumbrae, Bute, Arran and hills to the north. Beinn Mhic Mhonaidh, Glen Orchy - B+ Walk 21 June 2026

Six of us enjoyed an absolutely fabulous day for our walk up Beinn Mhic Mhonaidh from Eas Urchaidh carpark in Glen Orchy, led by Fiona. It was perfect for the amazing views from the summit of this great value Corbett. We stopped at The Real Food Cafe in Tyndrum for fish & chips on the way back. A grand day out!

Nine Mile Burn, Pentlands - B walk 31 May 2026

We had a surprisingly dry and often sunny day for our walk – the forecast had been bad! Eight of us enjoyed the varied walk in some of the lower Pentland Hills.

Ben Challum - A walk 10 May 2026

3 of us bagged this Munro near Tyndrum on a day which started in sunshine but clouded over in the afternoon.  We got only a few spots of rain.  However it was a very cold wind high up and we were in full winter layers, hats and gloves for quite a while, surrounded by the few remaining snow patches.  The top cannot be seen from the A82 but is a bit more interesting than the grassy slopes below that are visible – with a very short narrow ridge which adds a bit of interest just before you reach the top.  Photos by Fiona Taylor and Sana Irving

Falls of Clyde - B walk 26 April 2026

After quite a dry spell of weather, there was not as much water as would be expected in the River Clyde but it made a different and interesting view of the falls. There were lots of spring flowers in bloom and with lovely weather, everyone enjoyed this scenic walk.

Primrose Hill and Scenic Tower Loch Katrine - C+ Walk 25 April

We were lucky to have perfect weather for this beautiful walk in the heart of the Trossachs. We started by visiting the new scenic tower above the pier for panoramic  views up the loch as the mist cleared. The Primrose Walk was delightful with marvellous views, primroses, birdsong, woodland and lochside beach.

East (and West) Lomond - B+ walk 12 April

The 6 of us had an adventure!  We got none of the forecast rain but we got a lot more than the forecast wind.  Some of us literally crawled up to the top of East Lomond in probably nearing 50mph constant wind.  We attempted but gave up trying the descent towards West Lomond.  We could not stand up.  We retraced our steps down to the base of East Lomond then walked round it to meet our intended path.  We realised that it would be even windier on West Lomond so gave up that plan.  But we did go a distance along towards it and then back through Maspie Den to Falkland as planned so we still had a decent day’s walk.  But it was quite an experience.  At least it was sunny most of the day.  Photos by Fiona Taylor and Laura Muir.

River Kelvin Bridges Trail - C Walk 8 April 2026

Thirty two walkers turned out for an enjoyable trail to discover the bridges and other interesting features of the River Kelvin in Glasgow’s West End.

Almondell and Lin’s Mill Aqueduct - C Walk 25 March 2026

Delightful springtime walk on a dry day with 13 walkers. We took in Almondell Park to reach and cross a spectacular Aqueduct on the Union Canal. There were several interesting historical features crossed during the walk including the Nasmyth Bridge, one Viaduct and two Aqueducts.

The Whangie, Auchineden Hill and Burncrooks Reservoir - B Walk 15 March 2026

Very wintry weather at times for a 7+ mile walk from Edenmill past the Whangie and both the Burncrooks and Kilmannan Reservoirs. Quite a wind and tough going when the rain turned into hail and sleet! Yet, some nice bits of sunshine too and good views.

Glen Loin and Corriegrograin Loop, Arrochar - B walk Sunday 8 March 2026

We had a small group out to enjoy this long but straightforward circuit through forest for lots of the way, below the much bigger Arrochar Alps, which were unfortunately in the cloud for most of our day.  But the sun did show itself later in the afternoon and we could see odd patches of snow remaining near the top of Beinn Ime and Ben Lomond.  Photos by Laura Muir and Fiona Taylor.

Gleann Casaig from Lendrick Lodge - B walk 01 March 2026

Six of us headed up Gleann Casaig, from Lendrick Visitor Centre, in the relentless rain. We had to cross several streams with each one getting wider and deeper as we ascended eventually reaching one that was impassable without a boat!! We couldn’t continue so turned back and returned via a slightly different route. We still managed around 8 miles and 450m of ascent so not a wasted day.

Barr and Croy Hills from Auchinstarry - Easy B walk 22 February 2026

With a poor forecast and the expectation of rain, we were all delighted and surprised to have a completely dry day with a reasonable amount of sunshine for this short winter walk over Barr and Croy Hills.

Cashel Pine Walk - B walk 8 February 2026

A fairly damp day for the Cashel Pine Walk from Milarrochy Bay on Loch Lomond. It started with heavy rain but improved mid morning to reveal wonderful views and colours on the way up!

Meikle Bin - B walk Sunday 1 February 2026

We included Meikle Bin in a basically circular walk, taking in the forestry tracks which took us back along the shores of Carron Valley Reservoir.  What promised in the forecast and at the start of the walk to be a damp dreich grey day, in fact turned into sunshine with some blue sky just as we reached the summit which was amazing.  Just down from the top lies the sobering remains of a WW2 era Fairey Firefly plane which crashed in 1950 in low cloud, killing both crewmen on impact.  There was lots of cloud swirling round so none of promised long distance views from the top but it was very atmospheric and photogenic – and the sun even had some warmth.  So a dreich winter day turned out to be a lovely spring-like day.  Photos by Fiona Taylor and Laura Muir.

Ben Venue - B+ Walk Sunday 25 January 2026

Three of us enjoyed a wild winter walk up Ben Venue from the main carpark (15km, 852m ascent). We were well prepared for the wintery weather and it felt good to be out in the elements. There were gusty winds and some snow patches to cross or skirt around but it wasn’t very icy. The rivers and waterfalls were fast flowing and spectacular. We found shelter from the wind, on our descent, to eat our packed lunches more quickly than we normally do 🙂

Tewsgill Hill Loop in the Culter Hills - B walk Sunday 18 January 2026

We had a lovely walk in these rarely visited rounded hills, near Crawford, visible from the M74.  It was misty on the tops so the views were not as anticipated but although it was very grey we had no rain and it was just good to get out in January.  Photos by Fiona Taylor, Jan Breitshol, Mike Rendall and Sana Irving.

New Year Walk & Lunch. Mugdock Country Park & Caulders Restaurant. Saturday 3 January 2026

On a beautiful blue sky winter’s day, 31 of us joined the walk (32 for lunch) round areas of Mugdock. It was a lovely frosty day which meant no mud! Christmas walk and lunch Buchanan Castle Golf Club - 18 December 2025

45 of us met in the car park of the golf club to have festive mulled wine and Christmas nibbles, organised by Lesley and Angus, before a short walk in the Castle estate, also organised and led by Lesley and Angus.  This was followed by our Christmas lunch in the golf club.  All in all a very sociable festive occasion, thanks to Lesley’s organisation of the whole day.  Photos by Fiona Taylor and Karine Davison.

Dunmore and Dechrode hills from Fintry - Easy B walk 7 December 2025

A nice short local walk in the Fintry Hills for shortened daylight hours.  It was the festive ‘mince pie walk’ for a mere 5 walkers.  It was a dreich but very mild, cloudy day, and despite the forecast, we had no rain until we left Fintry for the Courtyard Cafe after the walk.  The small group was in good spirits even across rather boggy pathless ground above the Dechrode escarpment, and with fences to climb which were not there on the recce.  No great views but just good to get out surrounded by glorious autumn colours.  Photos by Fiona Taylor, Laura Muir and Jan Breitsohl.

Callander Crags and Bracklinn Falls - B Walk 23 November 2025

We made our way up Callander Crags in heavy rain, and then a little sleet, but were rewarded with beautiful autumn leaves, and views of snow covered hills. We then continued to Bracklinn Falls to see the spectacular waterfall in the gorge.

To the Falkirk Wheel - C Walk 22 November 2025

We enjoyed a short canal walk from the station to the Falkirk Wheel. We went in a boat up the wheel and had a short trip along the canal. It is a mechanism for raising canal boats from one level to a higher level, using Archimedes’ Principle.

Ben Donich - B+ walk Sunday 16 November

7 of us took on Ben Donich near the Rest and Be Thankful on a beautiful crisp, cold, sunny day.  The views of the neighbouring snow-covered hills were stunning against the cloudless blue sky, with the relief noticeably picked out in the low sun angle.  Some of us were in our microspikes for the first real winter walk of the season, as the ground was frozen hard whether on grass or snow.  There were a few stumbles along the way.  We didn’t quite get to the top as not everyone was happy with the brief scrambling required and we turned back.  But it was still a great day to be in the hills.  Thanks to all the photographers who submitted 49 photos in all, so the job of whittling them down to 15 was very difficult.  The selection is from Laura Muir, Fiona Taylor, Jan Breitsohl, Mike Rendall and Sonia Newman.  We finished early and were faced with Christmas already in full swing at Duck Bay Marina for coffee and cake!  An additional 2 photos for fun!

Kilpatrick Hills via the Slacks - B walk 9 November 2025

A large turn-out of walkers for what promised to be damp day for a walk up The Slacks from Old Kilpatrick. We made our way up muddy paths but enjoyed a good chat along the way.  After a short lunch break, it brightened up as we descended the Kilpatrick Braes and we had superb, sunny views along the River Clyde.

Ben A'an Circular - B walk Sunday 2 November 2025

Four of us enjoyed a lovely 15km circular walk, up Ben A’an and around Loch Achray via the Brig O’ Turk tearoom. It was a weather related change from the planned walk up Ben Venue (to be rescheduled). We enjoyed the last of the autumn colours display and were back before the heaviest showers of the day.

An Caisteal - A walk Sunday 12 October 2025

We left the Central Belt in mist (all day) to emerge into fantastic weather on this Munro near Crianlarich.  With swirling mists, no wind, and glorious warm sunshine, we had superb views all day, captured in lots of wonderful photos, from which choosing only 15 from the 46 submitted, was very difficult indeed.  It was challenging at times, with a lot of boggy, muddy steep ground up to the ridge where there were a couple of ‘interesting’ short rocky, scrambly sections, but it was a great day out.  Photos by Fiona Taylor, Campbell Russell, Laura Muir and Mike Rendall.

Loch Ard Loop - B walk Sunday 21 September 2025

Kerrera Island Circuit -B Walk Sunday 31st August 2025

Seven of us set off early in 2 cars to Oban. We arrived at 9.30am (after a brief stop in Tyndrum) in plenty of time to have coffee (and bacon rolls for some) before catching our booked Kerrera Marina ferry at 10.15 from the North Pier. It was a lovely crossing, shared with one other passenger. We had a great day walking all around this beautiful island, with lovely views. It was cloudy, windy, and mostly dry with some lovely sunny intervals. We visited the Hutcheson Monument, at the north end of the island, and Gylen Castle ruin in the south. We enjoyed our packed lunches in a sheltered spot on the rugged shore near the castle, looking over to the Slate Islands and Jura. We walked back along the wilder west side of the island, with views of Mull, to the Marina for the 5pm ferry. Back in Oban we enjoyed excellent fish and chips in Norrie’s before the drive home. A great day!
